Desoutter Industrial Tools announces the successful commissioning of its SETI-TEC Line Advanced Drilling Units (ADU) for the new Russian short- to medium-range MC-21 passenger jet airliner, developed by Irkut Corporation in cooperation with the Yakovlev Design Bureau.
SETI-TEC Line Advanced Drilling Units are designed for high-precision drilling of composite materials such as Titanium / PCM / Aluminum by one step in automatic mode. This solution enables manufacturing companies in the aerospace industry not only to improve the quality of the drilling but also to increase productivity in the workplace. Thanks to the automatic cycle the direct operator's involvement during drilling is no longer needed, which considerably lowers the risk of getting the defective joints.
SETI-TEC Line ADU is a universal tool for precision drilling in many materials. Spindle speed, feed rate, micro pack etc. can easily be modified by the customer based on existing tasks of the plant. SETI-TECH ADUs small size and low weight is another advantage, which ensures comfort and prevents operator's fatigue during the shift.
SETI-TEC Line ADUs are used for precision drilling of one of the most important and critical joint of the future airliner - the center wing section and outer wing junction.
According to Georgy Polyakov, Deputy Head of assembly factory of Irkut Corporation, "High assembly requirements for the new aircraft dictate the usage of high-precision assembly tools. Low tolerance drilling to parameters specified would be impossible without the usage of the new tools, such as automatic drilling units. Desoutter Industrial Tools were selected as the only tool meeting all the requirements for assembly tools and capable of delivering predictable results."

MC-21 is an advanced Russian short- to medium-range passenger jet airliner, which seats up to 211 passengers, developed by Irkut Corporation in cooperation with the Yakovlev Design Bureau. Advanced composite materials widely used to build the new airliner are exceeding by reliability its conventional counterparts made of metal alloys by 20-30%. The total share of composites used in MC-21 exceeds 35%.
High-aspect-ratio wings made of polymer composite materials allow MC-21 for higher aerodynamic efficiency and reduced fuel consumption.
Assembly of the wings is done by the new "AeroComposit-Ulyanovsk" plant. Unique assembly line, allows for automatic layout of spars and stringers, ultrasound quality control and wing panels machining. The wings delivered to the assembly with all high-lift and embedded systems completely installed.
